Society volunteer Richard Roberts has been searching for and mapping “lost” graveyards after researching his family’s genealogy and developing an interest in cemeteries. He and Librarian Ron Marcus agreed that he would create a permanent record for the historical society’s research library.
Plotting cemetery plans, photographing tombstones, documenting inscriptions, and adding general research, as of this writing he has completed data on 34 graveyards surveyed. He estimates that there are at least forty-four 19th century cemeteries in Stamford altogether.
The photographs need to be scanned and a full electronic record of the graveyards created. Volunteers for the scanning and electronic recording will be needed. Anyone interested should contact Volunteer Coordinator Jane Flounders or call the Society at 203-329-1183.
