Volunteer Coordinator Jane Flounders has this to say:
The Stamford Historical Society is largely a volunteer powered operation. We are always in need of volunteers for jobs as far ranging as education docents, Photo Collection and Library researchers, museum trip coordinators and receptionists.
Researchers, whether in the Photo Collection or the Marcus Research Library, work on requests from the public, data entry, as well as researching materials for upcoming exhibits. There are many individual research projects that can be taken on by volunteers. For those who feel comfortable with the computer we have many projects in the works that can always use more volunteers.
We are currently in the process of cataloging our
Research Library's books on the computer – a project done in connection with
the Ferguson Library and especially in need of volunteers. When completed, this database will be part of the Ferguson Library's online Catalog Search feature.
An interactive computer program, PastPerfect, is used to create a searchable inventory of the our objects and photo collections. Volunteers for both entities are needed.
Education docents help present our program on Colonial Life at the Hoyt Barnum House or take part in our Immigrant Stamford program at our Headquarters building. Both programs are presented as requested by school groups. The Colonial Life program is given from mid-April through the end of the school year and again in the fall ending in mid November. The Immigrant Stamford program is given throughout the year. Each program takes about an hour and a half. Full training is given for both.
The Society has organized two museum trips each year. These are day trips taken by bus and limited to about 40 participants. Trip coordinators plan these trips and make arrangements for docent led tours of the museum or collection to be visited, as well as planning lunch for the participants. The trips are well attended and enjoyable for one and all.
If you are interested in getting involved with the Historical Society and volunteering some of your time please contact Jane Flounders or call the Society at 203-329-1183.
Headquarter hours are Tuesday through Saturday 12:00 Noon to 4:00 PM.
