Portrait Exhibit – Best Face Forward Member's Opening Reception Sunday, April 26, 2:30 PM

BEST FACE FORWARD
exhibits portraits from the Stamford Historical Society’s collection.

Dating from the 1830s to the present, they serve as a historic canvas of the development of Stamford.  Included are portraits of Mayor Julius Wilensky and Civil War hero Captain Marcus Waterbury. Portraitists include Thomas Edgar Stephens, painter of Presidents Truman and Eisenhower, and Stamford’s own Dr. Jacob Nemoitin.

The Advocate writes:

[...]  The great Elms of New Haven and Hartford are still vivid in our memory and one can recall numerous other Connecticut towns that can boast of these typical New England Streets.

One of the many charms of Stamford is that she still has just such streets in her residential sections, and Mr. Bailey has chosen for today’s pictorial subjects a scene looking down Prospect Street from the foot of Strawberry Hill, a section most familiar to us all.

A Postscript to 'Hotels in Stamford' View of the Mill River from the Roger Smith Hotel, 1967

This writer came to Stamford – and the U.S. – on November 29, 1967

I arrived at JFK in the middle of a snow storm, then was dragged all about the parking lot until we found the snow-covered car, and finally taken to Stamford where I was put up at the Roger Smith Hotel.  By that time it was dark and I saw nothing much of the town.  The photo below, taken from the hotel room window the next morning, was really my first view of Stamford.  It's looking across the Mill River.  Looking at it right now, I can't quite figure out the angle from which I took the picture.  (Also, sadly, the slide has badly deteriorated.)  The cherry trees – gone as of last month – were still pretty small then.
